The Church is in turmoil world over. Much more than dwindling churches, lack of attendance in ‘Sunday Masses’ and rousing acceptance of anything connected with Hinduism globally, sexual perversion among the male clergy, homosexual and lesbian outbursts and financial scandals are bulldozing the church to a never before depth. Reports have come in, that the church spends billions of dollars every year, as compensation for victims of sexual perversions, inflicted by the clergy. There is serious debate, going on in the Roman Catholic Church to do away ‘celibacy’ conditions for nuns and brothers. Even now, due to non- availability of clergy in many European countries, persons who opt-for priesthood are given two months holidays every year, to freak out to any tourist destination in any corner of the world and enjoy, all material pleasures!
Kerala with a 25% Christian population, is the region that produces nuns and brothers and exports them to all corners of the Bharat and the world. Any where in the world you go, you can see a Malayali ‘sister or brother’ working for the local Church.
Although sexual acts involving brothers and fathers were doing the rounds for several decades, the issue got heated up with the Abhaya Case of 1992. Sr. Abhaya who was studying nunnery in the St. Pious X convent in the heart of Kottayam city was found dead in the well of the convent on 27th March 1992. Although the ‘Kananaya Christian Church’ with the political support of Congress, Kerala Congress and Police tried to hush up the case as suicide, it went to the CBI, due to the yeomon efforts of Human Right Activist Advocate Joemon Puthenpurakkal. After 17 years, several rounds of CBI probes and efforts to hush up the case by the church, the CBI finally arrested Father Thomas Kottur, Father Jose Puthrukkayil and Sister Sephi. Sr. Abhaya had seen these Fathers having sex with the sister. So she was hit on the head with an Iron rod and thrown into the well.
A few months back Sister Anupa Mary (22) who joined St. Marys Convent in Kollam was found hanging from the ceiling of her convent. Her father who is a cook in the Bishop’s place has alleged that, she was subjected to lesbian acts by other sister and forced to wash their undergarments. She had also in her suicide note, blamed the Mother Superior for lesbian perversions.
Similarly a 60 years old sister who has put 43 years Clergical Service with Congregation of Daughters of Mary Convent, Anchal, has been forcibly sent to Mental Hospital, Thodupuzha. Her ‘sin’ was revealed to the media about ‘abortions’ and limitless affairs’ between nuns and fathers going on, in the Church.
For the first time in the history of Catholic Church in India, the Bishop of Kochi John Thattunkal has been suspended by the ‘Vatican’ for living with a 26 year old girl in the Bishop’s palace! Out in the open!
At the ‘Christian Divine Retreat Centre’ in Muringoor, near Thrissur, it is free for all. Based on petition filed by a victim of rape the Kerala High Court ordered probe by honest and impartial IGP Vinson. M. Paul. He unearthed 974 murders in the centre, which has 14 foot concrete walls and huge buildings, spread in four acres of land. Bodies are disposed off without informing relatives and post mortem. Psychiatric medicines are given to non-mental patients and they are put in iron-grilled rooms. The cash and ornaments of the dead are looted. People are made drug addicts by forcibly injecting drugs and women are raped even by the ‘head’ Father Mathew Thadathil.
When former High Court Judge and Chairman Kerala Women’s Commission Justice Sreedevi mooted minimum 18 years age for nuns, legal action for forced nunnery (against parents) and action for usurping of property of nuns by the church, she was virulently attacked. The church called it breach of Individual freedom and threat to minority rights.
A survey conducted by the Christian mouth piece, ‘Sathyadeepam’ says that 25% of the nuns are unhappy and frustrated, suffering with Psyco-Social adjustment problems. They feel like fish out of water. There is severe class difference with the highly educated and rich bossing over the poor and uneducated. Moreover 14 suicides of nuns have taken place in recent times. The study calls for a serious deliberation on this explosive issue.
Now as a thunderbolt from the blue, the revelations of Sister Jesme (52) who quit the Congregate of Mother Carmallite Church after 33 years of nunhood, contained in a 183 pages book ‘Amen’ Autobiography of a Nun (DC Books, Kottayam-686001- Price Rs.100) in Malayalam is selling like piping hot pancakes world over. In a month, 3 reprints have been made and fourth is in the press. Sr. Jesme, a PHD in English literature and author of three books on poetry was principal of the St. Mary’s College and Vimala College, when she was forced to resign from the Congregate. She had fought against evil tendencies like commercialisation of education, especially professional course like Medicine and Engineering. She was branded as a psychiatric and forced to take drugs. Fearing death, she resigned from the convent.
In the 183 page book five pages are devoted to lesbian and sexual acts perpetuated by nuns, mothers, brothers and fathers.
On page 54 she says how a fellow sister crept into her bed and did indecent things, which she couldn’t prevent from happening. The sister revealed how she was cautioned about having relationship with, only, her sex.
On page 89 she reveals how a father behaved badly with her. He gave her a tight welcome embrace when she arrived at Bangalore. He took her to Lal Bagh and showed lovers sitting in intimate postures. Back at the convent, lecturing on the human need for physical love, he embraced her tightly and squeezed her breasts. He asked her to show her breasts and she, undressed, naked. He undressed and showed her his body and penis. After some time, he showed her the milk- like liquid (semen) and began to educate her on millions of life, throbbing in it.
In other pages she speaks about financial irregularities, corruption, nepotism, intrigue and patriarchy, prevailing in the church. She says the churches maintain two sets of books, one for public consumption and another private. She says the education institutions, medical and engineering colleges, hospitals, are only for the rich and powerful. The Medical and Engineering colleges are ‘Money Making Factories’ with amounts from Rs.50 lacks to Rs.100 lacks being charged for Medical Seats, affordable only for affluent NRI’s.
The Bishops live in absolute luxury enjoying the costliest food and partaking finest liquors. They travel in the latest and costliest cars.
She calls the Bishops, ridiculously stupid people. She says she is not against Jesus Christ or Church but against evil practices which she plans to cleanse from inside.
In an interview to an English Weekly she says she has got abusive calls with even known rich and powerful offering her sexual assistance. She says she left the convent since they were plotting to confine her to the dark corners of a nunnery, citing psychiatric illness.
Sr. Abhaya through her death and Sr. Jesme through her ‘Autobiography’ have revealed the sexual and lesbian perversions prevalent in the church. Fathers and brothers who are ‘Vultures personified’ are preying on hapless girls, who join as nuns, to escape from poverty.
The present pope and late John Paul II have asked pardon for atrocities committed by priests on nuns and fathers, but will Jesus Christ forgive the church, which does not provide proper security and environment to the girls who come to serve as ‘Angels’ in Christ’s Kingdom?
