On the occasion of 86th birthday commemoration program of Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee Chief Guest Mr. Nitin Gadkari spoke about
Mr. Vajpayee and released Mr. Tarun Vijay’s book on Vajpayee. Eminent editors joined the discussion on
“What Makes Me an Indian”.

The program held at Parliament House Annexe was presided by Mr. G. Pathasarthi, former ambassador to Pakistan along with Mr. Kidar Nath Sahani former governor of Goa and Sikkim and former President of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation.

The program witnessed the presence of top speakers like Mr. M J Akbar - Editorial Director, India Today & Headlines Today, Sanjaya Baru- editor, Business Standard, G Parthasarathy-former ambassador to Pakistan, and Mr. Arun Puri, managing director, India today group. In the discussion Mr. Akbar elaborated his views about caste, creed, language and religion he opined that we should overcome these boundaries and respect our identity as being “Indians” first. In his justification of his views he said that even after being a Muslim because of his openness he named his daughter Mukulika and son Prayag. Comenting on religious fanatism, he also said that today, the highest percentage of Muslims are being killed by Muslims only in Pakistan itself. He even quoted Mohammad Ali Jinnah, when he visited a refugee camp and seeing their state he said “I should be called a –‘Katil Azam’ rather then ‘Kaidaye Azam”.

Participating in the discussion Mr. Parthasarthy Former ambassador to Pakistan said that India is the only country which from ancient times has been able to absorb all religions highlighting the idea of “Vasudevakutumbhkam” – a home for all religions implying “Unity in Diversity”.
 On the occasion agreeing with Mr. Parthasarthy’s views about “Unity in Diversity” was Mr Sanjay Baru, who quoted a conversation between Mr. Vajpayee and P.M Dr Manmohan Singh wherein Dr.Manmohan Singh told Atalji that he is taking forward his legacy of ideas and polices. This statement in itself proves the willingness of Indian leaders to working hand in hand respecting each others ideologies.
 The programme was graced by the presence of Mr. Ram Lal –General Secretary BJP (organization) and many other parliamentarians.
